The UW Medicine Compliance Program has an outstanding opportunity for a (General) Compliance Analyst.

Each UW Medicine compliance officer is responsible for developing and implementing components of the UW Medicine compliance program for specific content or risk areas and/or for specific constituents. Compliance program activities include development of policies and standards, auditing, monitoring, education/outreach, investigations, risk assessment and mitigation, regulatory monitoring and program modification, and on-going evaluation and reporting of program effectiveness.

In general, UW Medicine Compliance (General) Compliance Analysts are responsible for performing daily activities required to fulfill the goals, audit plans, work plans, initiatives, and duties related to a specific Compliance program element or content area. All (General) Compliance Analysts maintain a skill set tailored to one or more respective content areas in order to assist in researching and preparing preliminary audit analyses/findings and responding to complaints. (General) Compliance Analysts assist in the preparation of or performance of audits and/or analyze data, prepare draft reports pursuant to the unit’s audit plan, and may participate in the development and implementation of follow-up education, outreach, and/or other corrective actions.

(General) Compliance Analysts contribute to compliance program development by compiling initial data for unit reports, participating in the development and/or delivery of educational and outreach materials, and ensure the ongoing maintenance of unit records. (General) Compliance Analysts collaborate with other members of the department to broaden and apply their current knowledge of applicable laws and regulations and may contribute to the unit’s risk assessments and risk mitigation strategies.

(General) Compliance Analysts function as part of a team to accomplish program goals, and work cooperatively with other compliance staff and entity staff as needed to resolve shared issues and concerns. In addition, they may participate in committees, workgroups, or process improvement projects as assigned.

(General) Compliance Analysts are responsible for participating in audits on multiple compliance-related topics, including but not limited to: medical record documentation accuracy, coding, clinical billing, clinical research billing, HIPAA, various federal / state privacy / security laws and EMTALA.

Reporting to the Senior Compliance Specialist who coordinates compliance activities for facility billing and external reviews, this specific (General) Compliance Analyst will conduct daily activities pursuant to the Clinical Billing Integrity unit’s goals, audit plan, and work plan. Analysts in the unit have regular interaction with clinic managers, revenue cycle staff, Patient Financial Services staff and Health Information Management staff.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain detailed external audit records, prepare accurate and timely reports, and generate statistical information as requested.

• Intake of all correspondence pertaining to external audit requests including faxes, emails and letters.

• Monitor, maintain and respond to the UW Medicine Compliance External Review email box.

• Contact the government payers’ on audits or appeals submitted.

• Conduct trend analyses to identify patterns and variations in external audit activities and assist with root cause analysis.

• Assist in the review of claims denials to assess coding and medical necessity issues.

• Research documentation, coding, billing and other related regulatory guidelines.

• Coordinate with Specialists, Analysts and Managers to develop feedback and draft educational material in response to external audit findings and investigative outcomes.

• Ensure that external audit requests and findings are responded to in a timely manner.

• Routinely interact with a variety of workforce members including, but not limited to, clinical service area managers, Patient Financial Services, Quality, Contracting, Revenue Cycle, Decision Support and Health Information Management.

• Pull and analyze data for regularly scheduled reports and provide updates regarding external audit progress and results to management.

• Under general supervision, provide feedback and education on external audit results to affected workforce members.

• Exercise sound judgment in the interpretation and application of law, regulations, policies and procedures.

• Safeguard the confidentiality of sensitive information.

• Perform other related duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and at least four years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience

• Knowledge of federal and state regulations related to clinical billing practices

• Growing knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS coding principles and guidelines

• Successful experience working both independently and in teams; while meeting tight time deadlines

• Ability to learn and adapt quickly, strong attention to detail and ability to maintain confidentiality

• Ability to prioritize daily operations appropriately

• Demonstrated ability to establish positive and courteous working relationships, effectively manage competing priorities, apply critical thinking skills, and accurately complete highly detailed work

• Ability to work within a complex environment and leverage resources to meet the needs of clients, customers and coworkers

• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with all levels of management and medical staff

• Effectively contribute to projects in a shared leadership model

• Must be comfortable and demonstrate continual success in an environment that experiences frequent change management

• Familiarity with medical billing processes and medical terminology

• Must be self-motivated, innovative, have good organizational and planning skills

• Proficiency with MS Office applications

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in an academic healthcare environment

• Proficiency with electronic medical records systems, databases, and related automated systems

• Experience in Healthcare Compliance

• Experience with clinic and hospital charge capture/billing processes

• Experience with electronic medical records (e.g. Cerner, ORCA, EPIC)

• Experience with audit tracking software

• Experience analyzing and presenting data

Condition of Employment

UW Medicine Compliance manages a significant volume of audits, inquiries and consultations. Work priorities shift in response to fluctuating demands. Full time schedules are assumed to be at least 40 hours, however, incumbents are expected to remain flexible to accommodate the unit's goals and mission, and to work beyond their normal schedule when necessary.
