Position Description: Under the supervision of the Deputy Building Official, this position supervises the field operations of the Building Safety Department, is responsible for supervising, training and mentoring of staff; monitoring the inspection process; ensuring compliance with applicable codes, related ordinances and national standards; performing a variety of building and property inspections to ensure compliance with City of Amarillo Municipal Code, which include nuisance complaints, zoning violations, substandard structures, weeds and uncultivated growth, junk and debris, junk vehicles, construction code requirements, mobile homes, mobile home and travel trailer parks; and enforcing other development regulations. Minimum Requirements: Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. Requires ten (10) years of construction experience, including two years of supervisory or management experience OR an Associate's Degree in a related field and five years of construction experience including two years of supervisory or management experience. Must have a Plumbing Inspector License from the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. A valid Texas driver's license required or must be obtained within 2 months of employment. Must obtain the ICC Plans Examiner, an ICC Inspector's certification, International Energy Conservation Code and Certified Building Official certification within two years of employment. The City may consider all related education and/or experience in determining an applicant's minimum qualifications and starting salary. Additional Requirements: - Extensive knowledge of the enforcement of construction codes. - Knowledge of basic drafting skills and construction standards. - Knowledge of City procedures and government functions and limitations. - Strong computer skills: Word, Excel, etc. - Ability to learn new software and improve processes with existing software. - Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate technical requirements to manage staff and co-workers. - Ability to operate computers and other basic office equipment. - Ability to use and repair equipment including the tools commonly used by field staff. Essential Job Functions: This position is primarily a field position with some time spent in an office environment. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force to move objects. The employee must also walk, climb, crawl, crouch, stand, kneel, sit, hear, reach, speak, see, and talk. Also requires the ability to make rational decisions and perform repetitive motions. Work Hours: Normal work hours are Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm, subject to after hours and weekend calls.
