Job Description Summary
This role is a key Executive leader within the Corporate Compliance organization of Bank of the West. This position leads a team of Compliance professionals responsible for overseeing critical areas of compliance subject matter expertise and the execution of their related programs, that include, but are not limited to, Regulation W, Regulation O, Customer Privacy, Volcker Rule compliance, and the Conduct, Market Integrity and Professional Ethics programs. This role must recruit, lead and empower senior leaders that are experts in these critical areas of compliance risk. This position and the team it leads will work closely and collaboratively with other groups within the Compliance organization to ensure business partners are provided a comprehensive view of compliance risks they can proactively identify and mitigate. This team will be responsible for providing advice, support, partnership and deep subject matter expertise relative to these subjects and should be continuously well-versed in industry and regulatory activity, trends, best practices and technology related innovations in these areas. This position requires the ability to provide proactive risk management, be solutions oriented, provide strategic vision to the team and business partners, cultivate deep compliance expertise on the team, and lead a large team of experienced professionals. This role will report directly to the Chief Compliance Officer.
Essential Job Functions
Be able to effectively manage a team of skilled compliance professionals responsible for deep subject matter expertise and program deployment relative to diverse and niche areas of compliance risk.
Facilitates and supports the team’s effective collaboration within the Compliance organization and with business partners to ensure a comprehensive assessment and view on applicable compliance risks. Provide effective challenge to business partners relative to business strategy, decisions and related compliance risks.
Cultivates a team and culture that seeks to continuously improve, stay well informed of industry and regulatory environment and innovations and that comfortably identifies, escalates and supports business partners in addressing risks and in a spirit of solutions oriented partnership.
Ensuresthe team has a deep understanding of the applicability and detailed requirements of all applicable laws and regulations within their areas of responsibility, and the related operational processes, controls, and related effectiveness and risks.
Supports and advise on business related control design, risks and opportunities. Work closely within the Compliance organization to coordinate on the execution of the team’s specific programs relative to the broader compliance program elements, and seek to find opportunities to be more effective through alignment of timing, methodologies and messaging.
Supports and conducts 2nd line monitoring activities as appropriate and provide timely feedback to business partners. Applies the compliance issue management practices to ensure accountability and sound corrective action and requisite reporting and escalation requirements. Monitors progress to address applicable compliance risks as appropriate.
Conducts due diligence of compliance risks related to third parties, new initiatives, products and services, regulatory changes, and other applicable business changes.
Reviews and advise on applicable business procedures, targeted training content and audiences, and other Bank or business driven content relative to the team’s areas of subject matter expertise

Supports designs and deployment of applicable Compliance training content
Advises on and support applicable regulatory changes and monitor business implementation
Supports execution of requisite Compliance reporting and governance
Supports and advise on and monitor applicable compliance related issues, customer restitution efforts, and ensure alignment with issue management standards and other applicable policies and procedures
Either this role or his/her direct reports will be responsible for chairing and/or actively participate in various Bank steering committees, own and/or support compliance policy development and updates, interact with other executive leaders throughout the organization, and update senior executive leadership regarding matters of strategic importance to the organization. Lead the team to be considered as points of contact and subject matter experts relative to the areas of responsibility.
Engages with other Compliance Advisory, Compliance Domain and Compliance Program Mgmt teams as appropriate.
Within scope of responsibility is empowered and entitled to make final decisions for escalated compliance issues related to supported business line(s).
Performs other duties as assigned
15 - 20 Applicable banking and financial service compliance experience.
10 years working closely with applicable regulatory agencies and related examinations.
10 years leading teams.
Bachelor's Degree Required
Master's Degree Preferred
Strong experience with applicable regulatory agencies and examinations (FINRA, SEC, FDIC, FRB, OCC, CFPB, State regulatory agencies)
Demonstrated history of strong people leadership, development and leading through change.
Excellent communication and presentation skills, including prior experience engaging executive management.
Negotiate and influence business partners and executive leadership relative to compliance regulatory risk factors, which may have strategic importance to the Bank.
Build strong relationships with Bank of the West, Intermediate Holding Company and BNPP executives and business partners.
Affect and support the Bank’s relationship with regulators by actively participating in periodic updates and exam interactions.
