How to Be a Better Compliance Officer
When you have accepted the role of being a compliance officer where you work, you may find that you are a little bit at a loss. This is an extremely important role in your company and you will find that if you want to do it right, you are going to need to change a few things. To get off on the right foot, make sure that you speak to your CEO or the person who is in the highest authority that you can reach. Get an idea on what the right shape of the position is going to be. You don't want to overstep your authority and you certainly don't want to step on any toes! When you want to do the best job that you can, there are definitely a few things to keep in mind.
One of the first things that you want to do when you are looking at being an amazing compliance officer is that you are going to need to make sure that the board where you work is familiar with what you are trying to do. If they don't know what you are doing, they won't know when you are being a success at it. There are steps that you need to take when you are thinking about moving forward and getting the right kind of work taken care of, and at the end of the day, the Board needs to know what your successes are. Have they acted on your recommendations and have they understood how important your work is to the way the company functions?
The next thing that you need to do is to consider how to create the business that you want to work with. Not only are you going to need to think about regular real time monitoring, you should take a moment to consider how you are going to be able to get the results that you are after. You need to be able to identify things like prospective security breaches and you will also need to look into who you can trust to make sure that the company keeps on going. Remember that you are in a great position to pull in support from everyone from Accounting to Risk Management to IT to Legal; these are important resources, so use them!
If you are going to be a compliance officer, remember that you cannot afford to have a sketchy viewpoint of the business. Far too many people are going to try to skate things past you, and this is simply not appropriate. Take a moment to consider what your options are going to be when it comes to getting a full picture of what is going on. In some cases, there are going to be people who just want you to add a little bit of protection to something that they know is wrong. Don't let them pull the wool over your eyes with a few sketchy details; this can be fatal!
Take some time and make sure that you consider how your job as a compliance officer might suit you. There are so many different ways that you can arrange to move forward and when you are looking at doing your job, you'll find that there are plenty of ways to excel at this position.
