Technology is becoming more prevalent in corporations and organizations as more and more information is being captured and stored electronically. While more convenient, this can also pose security risks to the company as well as violate government regulations that are in place to protect the business from a variety of security breeches. Compliance jobs address these potential breeches and head them off by creating programs, policies, and procedures designed to maintain that business's compliance to those laws. The more laws that are created, the more compliance employment will grow.

Enterprise Content Management (ECM) is a collection of technologies that corporations use to manage their electronic content. ECM captures, stores, delivers, and preserves documents and contents that are related to internal processes and organizational secrets. Compliance jobs in various organizations address the handling and management of ECMs, keeping the information secure and protected. These jobs are created to put in place personnel who can maintain the integrity of the organization as well as the system that is managing its documents, web content, software, and records. Compliance careers place people at the various stages of the ECM's lifecycle so that at each transition security is addressed and handled.

Compliance careers put people in place to ensure that businesses are adhering to government regulations concerning the handling of certain materials. The companies themselves also put certain regulations in place to ensure their security. This is just another boon for compliance employment.

Compliance jobs are designed to keep businesses out of trouble. There are different aspects of compliance careers, but overall, those positions police organizations, working to prevent misconduct and protect the individuals and companies that can be harmed by that misconduct. This can fall in many different areas including financial statements, advertising, labor, purchasing, off the book accounts, privacy, antitrust and more. In the area of ECM, compliance is integral. The most sensitive of information is stored and managed through an organization's ECM.

Compliance employment is enjoying exponential growth in recent years. As more government regulations are put in place, more areas are being revealed where compliance is required. It is expected that this field will continue to grow and expand, requiring a diverse talent from ethicists to IT professionals. With the many, varied areas in which compliance officers are necessary, it appears that the industry is expanding to create a diverse subset of nearly every industry on the workforce. As long as people are involved in organizations, compliance officers will be there to make sure that they stick to the rules.
